Bowen Wagyu

Wagyu History

Fullblood Wagyu genetics selected for growth, marbling and practical commercial outcomes.

In 2016, Bowen Stud Cattle established its Wagyu herd in response to the growing demand for Wagyu bulls to produce F1 feeder cattle throughout northern New South Wales and Australia.

Foundation females were sourced from Angus McClure’s Australian Wagyu Genetics Pty Ltd, a herd that peaked at over 400 cows. Angus McClure made significant investments in fullblood carcase performance, providing Bowen with the ideal platform to combine proven growth genetics with elite marbling sires. This strategy allows us to deliver cattle that achieve an optimal balance of growth and marbling.

Additional elite females were acquired through the renowned Kaputar Herd Dispersal of the Harris family. These large-framed cows now form a key cornerstone of our breeding program. In 2022, the Harris family set an Australian record for F1 progeny, grossing over $2 million for their weaners—further reinforcing the strength of these genetics.

Since 2016, we have conducted twice-yearly embryo transfer programs, sourcing the best available sires to accelerate genetic progress and expand our Wagyu numbers. Today, Bowen Stud runs approximately 150 fullblood Wagyu females, with plans for continued herd expansion as demand for Wagyu bulls increases.

Honesty and integrity are the foundation of our family operation. With over 58 years of involvement in the beef industry across three generations, our principal goal remains the same: to maintain a sound, practical and performance-driven breeding program.

We strive to produce functional, efficient and high-performance Wagyu cattle. Strict attention is paid to temperament, reproduction, carcase traits, structure, feet and the many attributes that contribute to an easy-care, productive animal.

The cow herd is the backbone of any successful beef program. For this reason, thorough evaluation of every potential sire—focusing on balanced multiple traits and, in particular, dominant cow families—is essential to our breeding philosophy.

At Bowen, we do not pursue single-trait selection. Instead, we strive for balanced, multiple-trait improvement.

No stone has been left unturned in advancing the stud’s breeding program, ensuring our clients benefit from cattle that have earned a strong reputation within the beef industry.
