Peakes Angus

Angus History

Sound, commercially focused Angus cattle backed by proven cow families.

Stephen and Jodi worked extensively throughout New Zealand, Canada and the United States, gaining valuable knowledge and understanding of each country’s cattle industries while identifying bloodlines renowned for soundness and strong commercial focus.

Following this experience, the decision was made to establish an Angus stud herd. In 1995, the foundation females were sourced from Barry Marshall’s Callen herd and the Mordallup herd in Western Australia.

In March 2010, the Bowen Angus program was further strengthened with the purchase of seven dominant cow families from the record-breaking Vermont dispersal. One of these purchases was donor dam Merrigrange Jestress V37, an outcross female noted for her depth, capacity and consistently strong progeny.

Honesty and integrity are at the core of our family operation. With over 58 years and three generations involved, our principal goal remains the development and maintenance of a sound, practical breeding program. Cattle are our sole source of income, and we strive to produce functional, efficient and performance-driven Poll Hereford and Angus cattle.

Strict attention is paid to reproduction, carcase traits, structure, feet and the many attributes that contribute to an easy-care, productive animal. Ultimately, performance is measured by our customers’ bottom line.

The cow herd is the backbone of any successful beef program. For this reason, thorough evaluation of every potential sire—focusing on balanced multiple traits and, in particular, dominant cow families—is essential to our breeding philosophy.

At Bowen, we do not pursue single-trait selection. Instead, we strive for balanced, multiple-trait improvement.

No stone has been left unturned in advancing the stud’s breeding program, ensuring our clients benefit from cattle that have earned a strong reputation within the beef industry.

The Bowen Angus herd has been performance recorded since its establishment in 1995. Cattle are recorded in large contemporary groups, allowing true performance to rise to the top without the use of aids such as creep feeders or foster dams.

Our cattle are recorded in large contemporary groups, allowing true performance to rise to the top without the use of aids such as creep feeders or foster dams.

Feedlot traits are an imperative component of our selection criteria across our Poll Hereford, Angus and Wagyu herds.
